Astronomy at the Beach 2024: Maybury State Park

Join the South Lyon Area Amateur Radio Club for Astronomy at The Beach: An exciting two evening event at Maybury State Park in Northville.

The SLAARC group will be presenting and demonstrationing during the event showing images captured
from NOAA Weather Satellites that soar overhead daily as well as making multiple attempts throughout
the evening to talk directly via radio to the International Space Station! The group will also be
demonstrating long-distance High Frequency operations using a popular digital radio mode called FT8.
Come on by the booth, on either evening to learn more about the club, and how amateur-radio can
unlock many exciting ways to communicate and receive information from space!

All of the club’s radio related activities will be occurring in the CLUB tent, which will be located adjacent
to the Telescope field. We’ll be looking forward to seeing you amongst the stars!

This event is hosted by the Great Lakes Association of Astronomy (website: https://www.glaac.org/) and
is in its 28th consecutive year. A gathering that will allow attendees of all ages to view and participate in
many exciting activities through the course of the two-evening spectacle.

7:00 – 7:30 PM: How to Make a Comet (tentative) – Michigan Science Center
7:45 – 8:45 PM: Keynote: Aurora – Melissa Kaelin (Michigan Aurora Chasers)
9:00 – 9:50 PM: Presentation: Light Pollution – Katya Gozman – Detroit Observatory (Tentative)
10:30 – 11:30 PM: Tour of the Night Sky – Telescope field, periodically
Saturday Sept. 21
4:00 – 6:00 PM: Solar Observing – Telescope field
7:00 – 7:30 PM: How to Make a Comet (tentative) – Michigan Science Center

Food and Drink will be available on site for hungry star-watchers. Please be aware: This is a FREE event, however, Maybury State Park requires a Recreation Pass to enter.
